Level 4 Diploma Therapeutic Counselling
ABOUT
This two year part-time qualification gives learners the knowledge, skills and competencies to work as a therapeutic counsellor in an agency context in both health care and non-medical settings.

Successful completion of this course means you will be able to provide a therapeutic counselling service – initially within the context of an agency’s service framework but later (with experience and support from the supervisor, or by completing PC-L5 or its equivalent) may progress to independent practice.

Counselling practice is a journey. You need to have obtained both our Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills and our Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies, or their equivalent.

What will you learn?
This two-year, part-time qualification is designed for those looking to train as professional counsellors in a counselling agency setting. Building on your previous learning, it provides advanced knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to work as a therapeutic counsellor.

You’ll explore different counselling theories, learn how to work ethically, safely, and professionally, and understand how to handle diversity in your counselling practice. Additionally, you'll develop your self-awareness and reflective practice as a counsellor.

As part of the course, you’ll gain practical counselling experience through a supervised placement and complete 20 hours of personal counselling.

Volunteering
The course includes a volunteer placement as a trainee counsellor, requiring you to complete 100 hours of supervised practice in a formal counselling agency. This placement will provide valuable work experience and opportunities to connect with employers. You will receive support in finding a suitable placement during your second year.

The qualification 'MAY' be eligible in England for Advanced Learner Loans (19+).

Course Assessment
We support you in building a creative and professional portfolio of your counselling journey. During the two years you will take part in observed counselling practice, and an externally assessed case review. Presentations and discussion work, including process groups are part of the journey to becoming a reflexive practitioner.
Commitment to Neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ in Counselling
This course in committed to in-depth acceptance and exploration of neurodivergence and LGBTQIA+ identities within the context of counselling. Students will learn about the unique challenges and strengths of neurodivergent individuals, as well as the diverse experiences and needs of LGBTQIA+ clients. The course aligns and emphasises the importance of culturally competent and inclusive practices, focusing on creating a safe and affirming therapeutic environment. Through case studies, guest speakers, and interactive discussions, students will develop the knowledge and skills necessary to support and advocate for neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ clients, promoting mental health and well-being in these communities.
